Following on from the signing of a memorandum of understanding by both Indonesia and China in 2007, the two countries are set to ink a new deal to work more closely in military technology, a top Defense Ministry official said on Wednesday, Antara reports.

"China will help Indonesia develop its military technology," the director of strategic environment analysis, Brig. Gen. Subekti, said in Beijing.

Defense Minister Juwono Sudarsono said recently Indonesia would diversify where it purchased military equipment from to avoid dependency on any one country.

Indonesia received six Mi-17 helicopters from Russia following a 2007 agreement between the countries that saw then Russian president Vladimir Putin provide a $1 billion loan for Indonesia to purchase 22 helicopters, 20 tanks and two submarines.

Jakarta – Indonesia Air Force Chief, Marshal Subandrio said that the substitution of two types of Indonesian air force jets OV-10 Bronco and Hawk MK-53 is postponed due to limited budget.  "We have proposed the substitution of the two jets, approaches to some producer countries have also been done.  However the budget has been decided at certain amount, additional budget is not allowed,” he said, answering ANTARA in Jakarta, Wednesday.

Jakarta – Indonesia Air Force Chief, Marshal Subandrio said that radar unit in Saumlaki, South East Maluku, will start to operate in 2010, to maximize the security of air territory in Eastern Indonesia.  "For east area we build three more radars, including in Saumlaki to be operated in 2010," said Subandrio, when confirmed by ANTARA in Jakarta, Tuesday, regarding air defence in Eastern Indonesia.
